Chapter 12

Silo 42, Level 34, IT Conference Room

Stewart was intensely going over the set of plans in the conference room when he was startled by a sharp knock on the door. He looked up and his eyes grew wide at the sight before him. He had been expecting the assigned engineer to be a man in his fifties with thick glasses and short cropped hair.

Instead, the beautiful woman standing at the doorway had the thickest mane of long dark hair and the deepest green eyes he had ever seen. She walked right up to him and extended her hand. “You must be Stewart.”

Despite her short stature, her handshake was strong, and he noticed the faint aroma of lavender. Working to recover from his initial shock he smiled and released her hand. “Yes, I am. And you are?”

“Vanessa. Vanessa Villanova, from electrical. What have you got so far?”

She was all business. He furtively glanced down past her full lips and perfectly shaped chin to see that she wore no necklace. She was not betrothed.

He shook off his distraction and looked back up to her face.

How much had Ahotay already told her? he wondered “What do you know about our task?”

“All I was told was to get my butt up to IT and help interpret some plans. I must admit this cloak and dagger stuff with all the security wigs me out a bit.”

“Yea, I know what you mean. But trust me, it’s necessary.” She walked past him and toward the pile of blueprints in the middle of the large work area and began to look at the thick set of documents before her.

Stewart spoke up. “These are pretty technical. Let me walk you through them.”

“Stew, can I call you Stew?” He was taken aback by her forthrightness, but he liked her spunk. “I have shadowed in electro-mechanical for a sixer and then was a project leader in the Mids for the past two years. I can read these prints just fine.”

Stewart was starting to think that this was going to be much better than he expected. “I’m glad to hear you say that cause honestly, I feel a bit out of my depth, and a lot of people may depend on our success.”

“Oh really,” she replied with sarcasm, not knowing that he was serious. “Well then, by all means let’s get to work.”

Vanessa looked down at the cover sheet and took in a short breath. “Do you know what these are?” She spoke in a lowered voice.

“Yah. These are the construction plans for the Silo.”

Vanessa gently stroked the top sheet in an almost reverent manner. “There are not just any plans. These are the original plans.

“According to legend, there was only one complete set ever made. These are the master plans. Since we have been making changes for decades, I wonder how much of the original drawings are still accurate?”

“I think we’re going to find out,” he said.

“So, what’s the deal?”

Stewart inhaled. “Our task is to identify and isolate any electrical connections between us and any external power sources,” Stewart explained.
